SHRUBS

Shrub planting requires written board approval and must meet the following requirements: not planted within 10 feet of the outer electric line of any electric easement in order to maintain ease of access for public maintenance, native or naturlaized, non-invasive, disease & pest resistant, and does not interfere with or hang over roofs or other HOA structures, including roof gutters. Any shrub planted becomes property of the Forest Condominium Association and is subject to any care the board deems necessary. Note that any vendor hired to maintain landscaping of the Forest will follow the trimming and care rules determined by the board. Environmentally suitable shrubs are listed as follows:

Definitions and Concerns:

• Conifers (also known as evergreens) do not shed their green leaves in winter. While some shedding is part of the normal life cycle of the plant, generally gardeners choose these shrubs for their lively resilience in our Michiana perma-cloud winter. However, gardners must be wise to the delicious temptation to forest wildlife, with some of the largest threat to these species being our friendly tailed deer, who don't mind takind second munchies on these fabulous deserts. Some evergreens provide berries for birds, and some are even known to flower, such as the River Nymph Lilly of the Valley. Keep in mind, that even though these plants are on the approved list, there are no gaurantees to their ability to thrive. Even a solid evergreen can fear the blight of frost bite. Soil, light, wind, water, and wind should all be considered. We highly encourage thoughtful and careful planning.
• Deciduous shrubs shed their leaves in winter, but their seasonal delights are sure to please. Just as with conifers, careful planning is encouraged. Gardners can enjoy a large variety of benefits from these brilliant displays, including attracting all sorts of fauna. Many native birds are known to munch on berries, bees love certain varieties for their nectar, and who doesn't love drinking in the lovely scent of Honeysuckle or Mock Orange. All sense are sure to be delighted and enchanged. Deciduous shrubs are known for their sensitivity, so be sure to consider light, water, wind, and soil.
• Our major warning, be wise to smart plant care. Currently, our most common invasive species in The Forest is the Q-Tip. Seriously, bushes need smart planting, careful tending, and tender pruning, so be sure to remember to allow the HOA to guide vendor landscapers on needs of the forest. Please pick shrubs that are easy to care for.
